Death had touched anthropologist Jade Hansen in Haiti once before, costing her an unborn child and perhaps her very sanity. A year later, determined to face her own issues, she returns to Haiti with a mortuary team to recover the bodies of an American family from a mass grave.

Visiting his brother after the quake, independent contractor Dane Carter puts his life on hold to help the sleepy town of Jacmel rebuild. But he finds it hard to like his brother’s pregnant wife or her family. He wants to go home, until he meets Jade – and realizes what’s missing in his own life.

When the mortuary team begins work, it’s as if malevolence has been released from the earth. Instead of laying her ghosts to rest, Jade finds herself confronting death and terror again. And the man who unexpectedly awakens her heart – is right in the middle of it all.

My Review

I have this talent of predicting plot points and endings. Blame the immense number of TV shows, movies and books I’ve encountered but my spidey parts can usually sense it a mile away. That does not impair my enjoyment of books, even if it should, especially with mysteries. As for Touched by Death, I totally did not expect that! I guess my spidey parts are losing their power. Heh.

This novel was definitely a page-turner. While I appear to be obsessed with YA, my first love was mystery. I was that kid who read Nancy Drew. Now, Nancy Drew mysteries can’t compare to this suspenseful number and the twists and turns beat any rollercoaster ride. Applause for Dale Mayer for keeping readers in the dark and on the edge even until the end and for making us care for the characters.

Dale Mayer has a way with words, creating an ominous feel even with the most normal situations. Just read the excerpt I posted before (and linked above) and there’s an eery atmosphere to the excerpt. She is also great with descriptions, taking her time to set the stage.

Overall, an amazing suspenseful romance mystery thriller! I recommend this to mystery buffs like me!
