My 2014 Obsessions – Part 3

This is Day 3 of me sharing my obsessions for the year and the penultimate post on this series (I love that word). If you want to know my favorite albums or my favorite tracks of the year, click on the links and it’ll take you to my kind of jam. Day 3 will focus on movies so yay!

I love watching movies and since 2011, I had a movie challenge that I always failed. Either because I watch too many TV shows or because I got so busy or because I gave all my time to reading. This 2014, I challenged myself to 120 movies (hahaha) then I rescinded that to a hundred because it felt impossible. But then, just a few days ago, I cheated and lowered the bar very very low to 50 movies. And this year, I conquered the challenge! YAY!!! Don’t call me out on cheating, it’s not your place.

Having only watched 53 movies this year, it’d be weird to choose my top 10 movies. That’s 20% of my total count. So I only chose five and 10% seems fair enough. (What are these hang-ups I have?)

If you want to check out all the movies I watched this year, you can do so HERE. I also include short reviews for each film so you can read what I thought. Without further ado, here are my top five movies of the year!

Top Five Films
(in order of watching)

On The Job (2013)

I am so happy to have a Filipino film in here. This was the first movie I watched this year and goodness, I can still vividly remember it. I am so happy to have started the year with a bang with this. My heart felt like it was shredded into pieces.

About Time (2013)

Before this film, I could never quite answer what’s my favorite film. Now I can because it is this film. Goodness.

Kill Your Darlings (2013)

Probably the only four-star movie in this list but come on, it was about the Beat Generation and it has DANE DeHAAN AND DANIEL RADCLIFFE. Love the script, love the plot, love the acting, the directing, everything. So yeah, deal with it.

Ruby Sparks (2012)

Because of this film, I’m pretty much a Zoe Kazan fan for life. This movie is perfection. I don’t have any qualms about it.

Dallas Buyers Club (2013)

2014 was the year I became a fan of Matthew McConaughey. I have yet to watch a lot of his films but damn, I’ve long forgotten the rom-com Matthew McConaughey. It is really the McConaissance. And please, Jared Leto. Here’s what I thought about this film right after I watched it:

Fucking A+. I didn’t even see Matthew McConaughey or Jared Leto. All I saw were Ron Woodroof and Rayon. Fucking amazing acting. It definitely deserves all the awards it won.

Done! How about you? What are your favorite movies of the year?

Of Ruby Sparks and Lo-Fang

Last June, I watched one of my five-star garnering films of the year, Ruby Sparks. I know, I know, a lot of people have been raving about it to me for the longest time and I’ve wanted to watch it for some time now. But I just got a copy and of course, I immediately watched it. And boy, were everyone right.

If you’re not familiar with it, Ruby Sparks is a movie released back in 2012 starring Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan. Kazan also wrote the screenplay and the directors behind Little Miss Sunshine directed it. It’s about Calvin, a bestselling author who has been in a sophomore slump, with so much pressure after his first book lauding all the awards and praises. He then dreams of a girl and starts writing about her and she comes to life as the titular Ruby Sparks.

This is in no way a review of the film but if you haven’t watched it, I suggest you do so. Great directing, wonderful screenplay and superb acting. Just generally aces in all aspects. But the point of this post is to share this amazing and super talented musician I chanced upon randomly, Lo-Fang. He’s a classically trained musician so he plays A LOT of instruments and his voice, OH HIS VOICE. He has this song called Confusing Happiness and I’m putting it in here, with the lyrics, so you can listen.

I had to break the code,
Go mad.

I tried,
To make a soul
From scratch.

If I could dream you in meticulous detail,
Would you ever come alive?
Would you ever come alive?
I’ll dedicate my days and 14 of my nights
Will you ever come alive?
Will you ever come alive?

I want this,
A confusing happiness,
Never knowing what comes next.
I want this,
All the agony and bliss,
From confusing happiness.

The dawn, no birds around,
Reborn, without a sound.
Oh no,
The fire drowned.

If I could dream you in meticulous detail,
Would you ever come alive?
Would you ever come alive?
Since I began, it’s taken two years in this hell.
Will you ever come alive?
Will you ever come alive?

I want this,
A confusing happiness,
Never knowing what comes next.
I want this,
All the agony and bliss,
From confusing happiness.

(If I could dream you up…)

If I could dream you in meticulous detail,
Would you ever come alive?
Would you ever come alive?
I dedicate my body and my conscious mind.
Will you ever come alive?
Will you ever come alive?

I want this,
A confusing happiness,
Never knowing what comes next.
I want this,
All the agony and bliss,
From confusing happiness.

It’s the perfect theme song for Ruby Sparks, isn’t it? The lyrics are perfect and the somber, mellow tone captures Calvin’s feelings all throughout the film. I had goosebumps when I first listened to the song and I can’t un-link this song to Ruby Sparks.

So, yeap, that’s it! I just made a movie and a song recommendation, which is kind of my goal when I said I’ll be posting here again. Hee. I hope you guys check it out. Really, they’re great. I stand by it.

Cloud Atlas releases Trailer

I’ve been waiting for this for so long! It’s in my Ten Movies I’m Looking Forward in 2012 and now it’s here! The trailer is here! I can feel the premiere coming really soon. So excited! <3 So I haven’t really read the book but I promise I will read it soon. I was supposed to buy it but it’s too expensive for my budget. Sigh. And I know the trailer is almost six-minute long but it’s worth it. Sure, you actually don’t get what’s happening but but but, sigh, I resign my case. I just want to watch this. Enjoy! (Ben Whishaw! Jim Sturgess! Tom Tykwer!)

The Perks of Being a Wallflower releases Trailer

Isn’t it fitting that I saw the trailer for Perks when I just posted that I finally have (more like borrowed) a copy of Perks from a friend in my previous post? Haha! And having seen the trailer, I can’t wait to read the book and to watch the movie. My only fear is that I’ll be imagining Logan Lerman as Charlie, Ezra Miller as Patrick and Emma Watson as Sam. I have a huge crush on Ezra Miller as well as Logan Lerman though I think I love Ezra more now. Oh my, did I really said that? Anyway, enjoy the trailer!
